Two quick thoughts about AirPods with cameras:
I understand the appeal: AirPods represent a unique opportunity for continuous interaction with assistants and your phone at large. However, there’s a social-affordance component that I think is being missed.
If you put cameras or other recording devices in places where people don’t expect them, you’re essentially creating a surveillance device, regardless of how it’s marketed. With people already on edge about privacy and surveillance, that social context matters.
That’s especially important because the only way out of this uncanny valley is to provide enough value to overcome the discomfort. I’m not convinced that simply making it easier to snap a photo of something like a book or album cover for later is enough. That could probably be automated directly: detect those kinds of photos and automatically process them with on-device AI.
I’m surprised we’re not seeing more experimentation with something like this in CarPlay Ultra.
One of the biggest disconnects today is that all the intelligence of your phone is still, well, on your phone. You can connect it to the car’s speakers, mirror the screen, and trigger some shortcuts from the car’s controls, but imagine if your phone (or the car itself, via its onboard cameras) could act as a truly intelligent dash cam.
It could detect an upcoming exit sign and alert you, recognize an erratic driver and warn you to give them space, or combine the video feed with telemetry like speed, acceleration, and location to provide context-aware assistance.
And in the context of driving, having a copilot that manages minutiae and lets you stay focused is genuinely valuable. The car feels like a much more natural environment for always-on sensing than putting cameras in your ears.
